SBDC - Small Business Development Center

The Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) Program is the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA’s) largest matching grant-funded program providing quality service to the small business community. College Food Security Initiative

ENMU-Roswell operates a food pantry that serves on average 57 students per month since its opening in October 2022. Our campus’s results from the New Mexico Basic Needs survey conducted in the spring of 2023 showed 55% of students along with 48% of staff and faculty members experienced food insecurity in the prior 30 days. Our food pantry is currently serving ENMU-Roswell students, adult education students and early college high school students. We are seeking this grant to supplement our existing food pantry efforts to be able to continue offering this needed service to students. Additionally, we are requesting these funds to assist in meeting the basic needs or our staff and faculty members by allowing them to be eligible to receive assistance from our campus food pantry. All previous grant applications were directed exclusively to benefit our students. This funding will increase our ability to ensure the members of our campus community can be served.

ACCESS Grant

The Academic Connection, Caring, Engagement & Student Success (ACCESS) project is a $3,000,000 initiative funded by a Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) Title V grant. The project aims to improve services and expand opportunities for area residents, particularly Hispanic, low-income, and first-generation students. It also seeks to re-engage students who withdrew from higher education during the pandemic. The ACCESS project will run for five years.

The ACCESS project supports several key services including:

  • Peer Mentoring: The project will expand the student ambassador program to reach out to withdrawn students and local high schools. These peer mentors will also provide support and outreach to prospective students.
  • Holistic Student Support Systems: The project will implement systems to promote students’ mental health and address basic needs to improve retention. This will include connecting students to mental health services, basic needs resources, tutoring, financial aid, and university transfer assistance.
  • Student-Focused Course Scheduling: The project will use data analytics to optimize course schedules to better serve students’ needs. This will involve implementing new software to analyze enrollment trends and align course offerings with student needs.
  • Sustained Faculty and Staff Professional Development: A teaching and learning center (TLC) will be developed to implement evidence-based practices and improve online learning. The project will also support faculty and staff professional development to improve online and in-person pedagogy and services for Hispanic and low-income students.

The ACCESS project is designed to create a sense of belonging and provide students with the help they need to re-enroll or stay in school. The project also aims to engage faculty and staff in asset-based mindsets and culturally responsive practices. The project prioritizes serving Hispanic and low-income students, as well as first-generation college students, who are disproportionately affected by the challenges that the project aims to address.
