Requirements to register for the CDL Exam:

1. There is a mandatory 14-day waiting period for new permits before you can be scheduled for an exam.
2. There is a mandatory 7-day waiting period if you have failed a previous exam. Third attempts of exams must be done on a Thursday or Friday.
3. There is a mandatory 1-year waiting period from the date of the initial exam if you have failed three exams.
4. The ELDT requirement must be completed prior to paying and scheduling a CDL exam, or you must meet one of the approved exemptions as established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
5. Any CDL training school that is located out of state must be recognized as an Interstate company, in order to be eligible for CDL testing in New Mexico. Out of State Commercial Motor Vehicles must also have International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA) decals on each side of the cab of the vehicle and the pulling unit must also be registered as Apportioned or International Registration Plan (IRP). Requirements on the day of testing include:

1. You are responsible for obtaining a valid, unloaded representative commercial motor vehicle (CMV) of the CDL Class you are testing for.
   1. We are not able to test with vehicles with School Bus license plates, HazMat placards, or tanker vehicles used to transport hazardous materials.
   2. We can conduct the exam with water tankers
   3. Class “B” exams cannot be administered in a tractor without a trailer, as this is classified as a power unit, not a true representation of a Class “B” vehicle.
   4. The testing location is NOT available for use as a practice site as you prepare for your CDL exam. The only time you should be at the testing location is for your actual CDL exam.
   5. Commercial Motor Vehicles are NOT to be parked overnight or more than 15 minutes prior to a scheduled CDL exam at the CDL test site.
2. Arrive at the test site at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time of your exam. You will be considered a no show, and your exam will be cancelled with no refund if you arrive 15 minutes or later after your scheduled exam time.
3. If you are driving a vehicle to the exam site which requires a CDL, you must have a licensed CDL driver with you when you arrive at the exam site. Otherwise, your exam will be cancelled, and you will forfeit your exam fee. It is not legal to drive a commercial vehicle with a Commercial Learner’s Permit without a licensed CDL driver accompanying you. Anyone coming with you to the exam should leave the test site until the exam is completed.
4. All items listed below are REQUIRED on the day of your exam. ENMU-Roswell examiners will review these documents prior to beginning your exam but do not need copies. Your exam WILL NOT be administered if you are missing ANY of the required documents, and your fee will be forfeit.
   1. Valid representative vehicle in good working condition (must pass vehicle inspection as outlined in the CDL manual)
   2. Verifiable Manufacturer Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
   3. Valid New Mexico Driver’s License with no hole punch
   4. Valid New Mexico Commercial Learner’s Permit
   5. *Valid proof of insurance for vehicle
   6. *Valid proof of registration for vehicle and trailer
   7. *Valid DOT safety inspection sticker/paperwork for vehicle and trailer
   8. CDL Examinees must provide their own vehicle for the exam
   
   

   *Government vehicles ARE NOT exempt from providing insurance, registration, and DOT safety inspection paperwork.

Please read the following potential errors and pitfalls to avoid an additional exam and testing fee.

MVD errors might include but are not limited to:

1. MVD might accidently keep or make a hole-punch in your current Class “D” or CDL license. This is human error but doing so invalidates your license. MVD should NOT keep or punch a hole in your current license or cut the corner off.
2. MVD might issue a Class “D” CDL permit. This is an error as there is no such thing as a Class “D” CDL permit.
3. MVD might issue the wrong classification, restrictions, or endorsements. Before leaving MVD, always verify that your Commercial Learner’s Permit and Driver’s License are accurate, or you will not be able to complete your CDL skills exam.

Vehicle errors might include but are not limited to:

1. Incorrect or expired insurance documentation, must be current for CMV and trailer.
2. Incorrect or expired registration documentation, must be current for CMV and trailer.
3. Lacking annual DOT inspection stickers or inspection form.
4. Vehicle is not operable or representative of the class and endorsements you are testing for. For “P” endorsements, you may not test in a school bus unless it has been properly decommissioned. All markings indicating “school bus” shall be covered or removed. If used exclusively for purposes other than the transportation of students, a series of diagonal black stripes should be painted on the rear of the bus.
5. Vehicle is missing a VIN number. All vehicles, including trailers, should have a visible VIN number.

Cancellations and Refund Policy

Cancellations and/or refund requests must be made no later than 5:00 p.m. on:

• Monday for a Thursday test
• Tuesday for a Friday test
• Wednesday for a Saturday test
• Thursday for a Sunday test

If you fail to cancel, or if you do not show up at your designated test time, your $200 fee is forfeit and a new payment is required to schedule another test. You MUST contact Testing Services to cancel at 1 (575) 624-7227 or email [email protected].

No-charge exceptions permitting the testing fee to be used for a future exam are limited to:

1. Inclement weather and/or unsafe conditions as determined by the CDL examiner
2. Issues with the exam site or unsuitable site conditions as determined by the CDL examiner
3. CDL examiner illness

Refunds will only be permitted if requested according to the schedule above, a no-charge exception as a result of the CDL examiner cancelling the test, or if an applicant is unable to schedule an exam.
