What is Scrubs Camp?
Established in 2019
Scrubs Camp was established in June 2019 with the vision of showcasing the scope of healthcare programs offered on our campus while inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. What began as a two-day immersive experience has since been refined into a dynamic and impactful one-day event, designed to maximize student engagement and exposure to the collaborative nature of patient care.
Demonstrating Multiple Healthcare Disciplines
The camp highlights a variety of disciplines, including Respiratory Therapy, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Nursing, Medical Assisting, Phlebotomy, and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs. A key component of Scrubs Camp is the involvement of both current students and program alumni, who serve as mentors and ambassadors, offering authentic insight into their educational journeys and career pathways. Their participation not only enriches the experience for attendees but also strengthens recruitment efforts by providing relatable role models.
Community Partnerships
Community partnerships play a vital role in the success of Scrubs Camp. Local hospitals and flight crews generously contribute their time and resources, helping to create a realistic and memorable experience. The camp primarily targets students in grades 10 through 12 from RISD high schools, as well as neighboring communities such as Dexter, Artesia, and other surrounding areas.
What can I Expect if I Attend Scrubs Camp?
The Simulation Begins
The day begins with an exciting outdoor simulation in which the EMS team responds to a patient scenario. Students witness firsthand as the patient is assessed, stabilized, and prepared for transport. A highlight of the event is the arrival of a medical helicopter, which lands on campus and participates in the simulated transfer, demonstrating how critical patients are transported to higher levels of care.
Patient is Admitted to the Hospital
Following the outdoor scenario, students transition indoors to continue the patient’s journey through the healthcare system. They observe and participate in a series of staged experiences that illustrate what happens once a patient arrives at the emergency department, is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, progresses through rehabilitation, and ultimately attends follow-up visits with their physician.
From Incident Response to Treatement
This comprehensive, start-to-finish approach allows students to see how an interdisciplinary healthcare team collaborates to provide seamless, patient-centered care. By following the patient’s journey from initial emergency response through recovery and discharge, Scrubs Camp offers a powerful and engaging look at the vital roles each healthcare profession plays in achieving positive patient outcomes.
Ultimately, Scrubs Camp serves as both an educational experience and a recruitment initiative, sparking interest in healthcare careers while emphasizing teamwork, compassion, and the impact of coordinated care.
