Student Led Journalism & Broadcasting Team Cover the Air Races
The opportunity was made possible through the Community News Transformation Grant program, which has allowed ENMU-Roswell students to receive practical training while developing the skills needed to help tell the stories of their community.
Led by Media Arts Program Coordinator Candace Cantu and Communications Instructor Dr. Shawn Hughes, students spent the weekend working on location at the National Championship Air Races, capturing interviews, video footage, event coverage, and stories from throughout the event.
For many of the students, this marked their first opportunity to work as part of a journalism and broadcasting team in a large-scale, fast-paced event environment.
Students were responsible for preparing equipment, conducting interviews, capturing quality audio and video, working collaboratively in teams, and adapting to the challenges that come with producing media outside of the classroom.
Their hard work does not end with the event itself. The team will now begin the post-production and editing process, reviewing hours of footage, organizing interviews, creating graphics and lower thirds, editing stories, and preparing content for multiple platforms.
This next phase will give students additional experience in transforming raw footage into polished journalism and broadcasting pieces that can be shared with the college and the greater community.
“We are incredibly proud of the work our students completed throughout the weekend,” said Cantu. “They stepped outside of the classroom and experienced what it is like to work in a real-world media environment. They interviewed people, worked together under deadlines, problem-solved on location, and represented ENMU-Roswell extremely well. Now we get to take everything they captured and turn it into stories.”
The National Championship Air Races serve as the team’s first major project through the Community News Transformation Grant program, with additional opportunities expected to continue giving students practical experience in journalism, broadcasting, and community storytelling.
ENMU-Roswell looks forward to sharing the students’ completed stories, interviews, reels, and broadcast content as the editing process gets underway.
