About 130 graduates are expected to participate in Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell’s Seventieth Commencement Convocation on Thursday, December 13 at 7 p.m. at the Roswell Convention Center, 912 N. Main St.

Presidential Scholar and candidate for graduation, Sara Hankins, will be the commencement speaker.  Hankins is a 2016 Goddard High School graduate. She will be receiving an Associate of Arts degree in University Studies with honors. She plans to pursue a degree in Teacher Education at ENMU, emphasizing health/physical education.

Hankins actually began her college education on a golf scholarship at Lubbock Christian University. When the college’s funding was cut, she decided to return to Roswell and was notified that she was still eligible to receive the Presidential Scholarship. She began attending ENMU-Roswell in the fall of 2017 and discovered she thrived in the smaller community college setting. Although her parents didn’t graduate from college, she was raised knowing she would go to college. “I feel I had a strong foundation for learning, but coming here I found it grow and deepen,” she said. Hankins, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, said she also connected with her instructors, advisors, and other students. She appreciates the support system she experienced on campus.

In addition to taking online classes this fall, Hankins stays busy coaching  freshman volleyball at Goddard High School. Hankins and her husband, Austin, plan to continue living and working in Roswell. She also enjoys hunting and spending time with family.
