ENMU-ROSWELL HOSTS FIRST ANNUAL AVIATION CAMP

ENMU-Roswell will hold its first annual Aviation Camp June 5-9. The camp is designed for high school students who will explore the exciting careers and opportunities available in aviation. Students will see demonstrations, listen to experts, and experience first-hand what it’s like to work in air traffic control, flight, and aviation maintenance. The camp will cost $99 to attend one of the two sessions scheduled each day:  8 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Everything is coming together for Roswell to become the aviation hub of the region” said Chad Smith, Assistant Vice President of Technical Education. “Local support for this event has been very good and the list of sponsors is growing daily so we expanded the camp to 5 days to make room for additional activities and sponsors.” So far, campers will actually fly an airplane with a Certified Flight Instructor, interact with scientists from The Spaceship Company (a subsidiary of Virgin Galactic), take trips through the AerSale and Stewart Industries hangars, tour the FAA tower, explore a variety of aircraft, see an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) demonstration by Airplay Media and Adventures, spend time in a full motion flight simulator, hear a variety of speakers, and participate in group activities.

The camp will conclude with a cook-out and graduation ceremony where the students will be presented with their “first flight” official log book and be briefed on how to continue their career in aviation.

Space is limited so students need to complete an application by Friday, May 12. Applications are available in office 101 of the Lawrence C. Harris Occupational Technology Center at 22 W. Mathis St. on the ENMU-Roswell campus. The application is also posted on the ENMU-Roswell web site,  www.roswell.enmu.edu under the “News” heading. Students may also request an application by calling Vickie Thomas, director of the Center for Workforce and Community Development, at (575) 624-7164.
