The endowment scholarship was established by the family of Steve Lovato to remember his life and legacy shortly after his death. This permanent endowment fund provides scholarships to deserving individuals interested in becoming EMT’s. The fund is administered by the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell Foundation.
On March 16, 2002, EMT-I Steve Lovato was killed while on duty, working for AMR (American Medical Response) responding to an explosion. Lovato, 30, was an accomplished Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate with American Medical Response since 1998. He received his initial EMT training in Las Cruces and had been with the Roswell operation since that time. Lovato was known for his passion for emergency medicine and his unselfish desire to help others. He often commented about how much he loved going to work and serving his community. Lovato was also a foster parent and the area Porta-Medic.
