Special Services - Setting Up Academic Accomodations

How to register with the Special Services Department:
- Apply to be accepted for admission to ENMU-Roswell through regular admission process. You can fill out the online application for admissions here.
- Contact the Special Services Department and set up an appointment. Contact information is provided on the Special Services home page.
- Provide the department with current and comprehensive documentation of a diagnosed disability.
- After documentation is reviewed, schedule meeting with the director or deputy director to determine appropriate accommodations at the beginning of each semester.
The student is responsible for delivering the accommodations form generated during the meeting with the director or deputy director to his/her instructors. Students are encouraged to meet with their instructors to discuss their testing and other accommodations at the beginning of each semester.
Documentation Requirements:
The documentation submitted to our office should be current (in most cases three to five years), comprehensive, and include the following:
- A specific diagnosis, including level of severity,
- The specific findings in support of the diagnosis including relevant history, observations of the individual, tests administered, test results, and your evaluator’s interpretation of those test results. For a diagnosis of Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and other psychological disorders, a neuropsychological examination, psychological, or psychoeducational evaluation is required to determine eligibility for services as a student with a disability. Objective evidence of a substantial limitation must be provided,
- A description of the student’s functional limitations as they are directly related to the stated disabilities and necessitate any accommodations,
- The evaluator’s name, professional credential relevant to the diagnosis, and his/her contact information, and
- The documentation must be on letterhead, typed, dated, and signed.
The professional making the diagnosis of a disability should be an appropriately trained evaluator, such as a physician, psychologist, psychiatrist, or educational diagnostician. For example, an audiologist would diagnosis a hearing impairment and a psychologist or psychiatrist would diagnosis a psychological disability (e.g., Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, etc.).
The Special Services Department reserves the right to request additional information or evaluation.
Types of Accommodations:
Accommodations are determined on an individual basis. Accommodations usually provided include extended testing time, use of a reader, use of a scribe, non-distracting testing environment, sign language interpreters, books on cd, screen readers, and other types of software.
Accommodations cannot be retroactive and begin only after documentation is received and reasonable time for accommodation development has been allowed.
Tutoring is not provided by the Special Services Department. Students are referred to the Developmental Studies Lab to set up tutoring services.
