No. Academic accommodations are provided to eligible students free of charge.
Defining a Disability
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a disability is defined as a mental or physical impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities which includes caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working.
Academic Accommodations
Academic accommodations are adjustments to a course, program, service, job, activity, or facility that enables a qualified individual with a disability to have an equal opportunity to attain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to an individual without a disability. Accommodations are provided on an individual basis. Examples include extended test time, sign language interpreters, reader services, books on cd, scribe services, note taking assistance, and adaptive technology.
Testing Accommodations
Students who are eligible may receive testing accommodations including extended test time, non-distractive room, scribe services, and large print exams. The Special Services Department works to ensure that appropriate testing accommodations are provided for students who are eligible for services. In order to maintain the integrity of the testing services, and the exams being administered, the rules apply to all users of testing services. (PDF of Testing Rules)
Adaptive Technology
Adaptive Technology is the use of technology to provide equal access to information. Types of Adaptive Technology include books on cd, textbook scanning, screen readers, and many others.
Disability Suspected
If you suspect you have a disability that is impacting your academic performance, you will need to provide documentation of that disability by a qualified professional. An appointment will need to be scheduled to meet with the director or deputy director to review documentation and the need for services.
Getting a diagnosis
Colleges and university are not required to conduct or provide testing. The student is responsible for providing current documentation. However, we do provide referral information.
