NATIONAL KIDS TO THE PARKS DAY SET FOR MAY 19
ENMU-Roswell and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NM, along with the City of Roswell, Healthy Kids Chaves County, and NM Department of Health, are hosting Roswell Kids to the Park Day on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. at the Spring River Park and Zoo. The event is part of the National Kids to Parks Day. Roswell is the only site in New Mexico hosting this event to reclaim America’s parks through play.
At a time when the obesity epidemic is touching nearly one in three children who are either overweight or obese, communities are witnessing sky-rocketing rates of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated cholesterol levels in children. The community partners are committed to a simple motto: “Active kids are healthy kids.” Roswell residents are encouraged to use this National Kids to Parks day as the first of many days spent outdoors, at local parks and recreation sites, to develop more healthy lifestyles.
May 19th is packed full of activities including disk golf, lacrosse, an obstacle course, hula hoops, jump ropes, Rubrik’s cube contests, jolly jumps and movement activities. Ballet Folklorico, Miss Roswell, and local bands will provide live entertainment. Every child attending will receive a free prize including jump ropes, Frisbees, or foot bags. Healthy snacks will be provided, plus Blue Bear will join in the festivities.
The program is the first of four summer programs that have been designed to increase activities for kids in Roswell, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage parents to get involved in activities with their children. The other dates are June 17, July 21, and August 5. The events feature numerous activities, give-a-ways for every child, arts and crafts, entertainment, and something for everyone.
