About

College History:

Located on the south side of Roswell, the modern campus is the perfect setting for success.  Established in 1958 as Roswell Community College, a branch of Eastern New Mexico University, students initially enrolled in evening classes offered at a local high school.  Daytime classes were later held at the old post office.  When Walker Air Force Base closed in 1967, the college acquired buildings and land to establish a campus.  The college was re-named Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell.

In November of 2004, a statewide General Obligation Bond Issue was passed by voters, which will generate an additional $3.1 million dollars to help fund the Health Sciences Center construction and provide for infrastructure improvements.
Several new degrees and certificates were added to campus offerings from 2002 through 2004. An Allied Health Educator program and a Media Arts program were added in 2005. Construction on the new Health Sciences Center began in July of 2005.  The 38,000 square foot building will consolidate all of the health programs under one roof.  Classes in the new building are expected to begin in spring of 2007.   Through a partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health, a new facility for the New Mexico Rehabilitation Center will be built on campus property adjacent to the Health Sciences Center.  A new privatized housing development project is also in progress.  Under a long term ground lease provided by the University, the project calls for the construction of 105 units with approximately 250 beds.  The new housing is expected to be ready for the fall 2007 semester.

New degrees and certificates continue to be added to campus offerings each year.  Most recently approved were the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning Technology Certificate of Completion, the Commercial Refrigeration Certificate of Completion, and the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning-Refrigeration Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree. Also approved is a Certificate of Occupational Training in Web Site Development and Administration.
The number and diversity of online classes continues to increase with about 100 courses available online each semester.  Currently, the campus offers a complete online Associate of Arts degree in University Studies.

Programs Offered:

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell is a dynamic, academic and career oriented Community University. ENMU-Roswell offers more than 70 certificates and associate degrees in a variety of academic and career oriented programs.  ENMU-Roswell students take online classes, pursue advanced degrees, and receive personal attention from instructors using the latest in education technology. Hundreds more are served through a variety of non-credit classes and numerous community partnerships. Campus Life:

A Student Activity Board oversees the activities of numerous student clubs on campus.  The Phi Theta Kappa honor society is especially active, as are the student organizations associated with health programs.  The campus also has an active intramurals program.  A beautiful outdoor pool is open to the public and students during the summer.  The average student age is 28, but there is no ‘average’ ENMU-Roswell student.  Some students have just graduated from high school or transferred from other colleges, while others are returning to college after many years’ absence or taking classes to upgrade their job skills.

Campus Profile:

The campus features modern classrooms and labs, as well as quiet outdoor and indoor study areas.  In the Instructional Technology Center, students take advantage of the latest in educational technology.  The center houses an open student computer lab, instructional television classrooms, computer and science labs, and ‘smart’ classrooms.  A video conferencing system allows users to broadcast ‘real time’ meetings, seminars and classes with single or multiple sights any where in the world.  Dedicated video conferencing rooms are also available on campus for the ENMU-Roswell Instructional Television network, which broadcasts classes to area high schools.

Residence Halls offer on-campus housing for approximately 120 students.  Students enjoy apartment-style living with two-bedroom suites.  A full-service cafeteria provides meals to students and staff.

Core Values

Preface: Our fundamental purpose is to be a quality institution, operated by dedicated people providing educational services and opportunities that meet the needs of our students and our community. We aspire to be recognized in our community as a caring institution, committed to high standards in all our educational programs and services. As a publicly-supported community college, we strive to provide opportunities for the educational development of our students and a fulfilling work environment for our employees. When students enroll in the College and when employees are hired, they are expected to commit themselves to these institutional values.

Because we believe in providing a quality educational environment for our students and employees alike, the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award core values provide a framework for our institutional values. The following are our core values as adopted from Education Criteria for Performance Excellence, Department of Commerce, 2000, p. 2-5:

  1. Visionary Leadership
    1. An organization's senior leaders need to set directions and create a student-focused, learning-oriented climate, clear and visible directions, and high expectations.
    2. Senior leaders should serve as role models, reinforcing values and expectations and building leadership, commitment, and initiative within the organization.
  2. Learning Centered Education
    • Learning-centered education places the focus of education on learning and the real needs of students.
    • Organizations of all types need to focus more on students' active learning and on the development of problem-solving skills.
    • Key characteristics of learning-centered education are:
      1. setting high developmental expectations and standards for all students
      2. understanding that students may learn in different ways and at different rates
      3. providing a primary emphasis on active learning
      4. using a formative assessment to measure learning early in the learning process
      5. using summative assessment to measure programs
  3. Organizational and Personal Learning
    • The term organizational learning refers to continuous improvement of existing approaches and processes and adaptation to change, leading to new goals and/or approaches. Learning needs to be embedded in the way an organization operates.
    • Education improvement needs to place very strong emphasis on effective design of education programs, curricula, and learning environments.
    • The overall design should include clear learning objectives.
    • A central requirement of effective design is the inclusion of an assessment strategy.
    • Organizations invest in the personal learning of faculty and staff through education, training, and opportunities for continuing growth.
  4. Valuing Faculty, Staff, and Partners
    • Valuing faculty and staff means committing to their satisfaction, development, and well-being.
    • For faculty, development means building not only discipline knowledge, but also knowledge of student learning styles and of assessment methods.
    • For staff, development might include classroom and on-the-job training, job rotation, and pay for demonstrated skills.
    • Education organizations should also seek to build internal and external partnerships to better accomplish their overall goals. Internal partnerships might include those that promote cooperation among faculty and staff groups such as unions, departments, and work units.
  5. Agility
    • An important measure of organizational effectiveness is a faster and more flexible response to the needs of students and stakeholders.
  6. Focus on the Future
    • Pursuit of education improvement requires a strong future orientation and a willingness to make long-term commitments to students and to all stakeholders - communities, employers, faculty, and staff.
    • An organization should anticipate many types of changes in its strategic planning effort.
  7. Managing for Innovation
    • Innovation to be meaningful improves an organization's services and processes and creates new value for the organization's stakeholders.
    • Innovation should focus on leading the organization to new dimensions of performance.
