Joan Arnold - Interim Dean of Liberal Arts

Joan has an extensive and varied background in education, teaching, management, and human relations, which makes her uniquely qualified to be a division dean.  Joan has a Master’s of Business Administration and a Masters of Education, both from ENMU Portals.   In her tenure as the full-time Business Instructor in the Division of Business & Science, she has also demonstrated her high standards for education and her passion for students to be successful.

Sherry Durand - Administrative Assistant, Liberal Arts Division

Mrs. Durand began working at ENMU-Roswell in the Spring of 2001. She received her CAS degree in the Fall of 2010. Sherry, her husband Roger, and their two sons spend most of their spare time working on their family farm/ranch in Dexter.

Dr. Robert Bender - History Instructor

B.S., U of Wisconsin-La Crosse; M.A., Ph.D., U. of Arkansas

Dr. Bender is a tenured faculty member who began teaching history at ENMU-Roswell in the Fall of 2002. He is the 2006 recipient of the "Excellence in Teaching Award" from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. His publications include Like Grass before the Scythe: The Life and Death of Sgt. William Remmel, 121st New York Infantry (Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press, 2007), and the wartime diary of Confederate Brigadier General Daniel Harris Reynolds (which was recently published) His specialization is the American Civil War.

Jennifer Bower - Instructor of Art and Spanish

B.A., Macalester Coll.; M.F.A., Claremont Grad. School

Ms. Bower is a tenured faculty member who began teaching at ENMU-Roswell in the Fall of 1999. She is a former Bush Foundation Fellow who teaches Drawing, Painting, Design, Art Appreciation, Art History and Comic Book Design. She paints, writes and raises Dogues de Bordeaux in her off hours. She has exhibited paintings in Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, California, Texas, New Mexico, New York and Central America, and has published a variety of short written works.

Kimberly Childress - Instructor, University Studies

Ms. Childress, a retired Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, is a tenured faculty member who has taught at ENMU-R since 1998 for the Division of Health, Developmental Studies and Liberal Arts Divisions.  She currently teaches University Studies and coordinates University Studies courses for the division. She received the Spirit of Eastern Award in 2000.  She is a former president of the New Mexico Board of Examiners for Occupational Therapy, served as an advisor for Phi Theta Kappa, and a member of Faculty Senate.   Her outside interests include enjoying natural beauty.

Dallas Jeffers-Pollei - Instructor, Humanities and Theatre

A.A. Western Texas College, B.A., West Texas A & M, M.S., Illinois State University

Mr. Pollei teaches Theater, Humanities and Comic Book Design. He is also the chair of the Theater section of the SW Texas Pop Culture Conference. As director for ENMU-Roswell theater productions, he has worked professionally in theater in Boston, New York and Illinois. Mr. Jeffers-Pollei also has a background in art and graphic design.

Mike Jimenez - University Studies Instructor

A.A., ENMU-Roswell; B.A., English, ENMU; M.A., English, ENMU

Mr. Jimenez teaches University Studies and  Work Skills for the New Mexico Youth Challenge Academy.  He received an award for Academic Excellence from the ENMU Department of Languages and Literature and served as Editor of the ENMU El Portal Literary Magazine for 2007 and 2008.  He is fluent in both English and Spanish and can speak a little Mandarin Chinese.  His Creative Thesis for his Master’s Degree was writing a book titled The Mulberry Street Stories. He has taught Creative Writing at ENMU, is a former Marine, a former Sailor serving aboard a Fast Attack Submarine out of Norfolk, Virginia.  He has studied judo, karate, kung-fu and a little aikido.  He has also climbed down into an active volcano, been 400 feet below the ocean’s surface in the midst of the Bermuda Triangle, seen whales off the coast of California,  and has stood inside the largest brass statue of the Buddha outside China.   www.crazytownroswell.com

Dr. Nicholas Macaluso - English Instructor

Dr. Macaluso is a tenured faculty member who has been with ENMU-Roswell since 1998. He teaches English, and lives in Roswell with his wife (also an ENMU-Roswell faculty member) and child.

Annemarie Oldfield - English Instructor

B.A., M.A., ENMU

Ms. Oldfield has been teaching students to write for almost twenty years. She teaches English composition and literature for ENMU-R and is the Director of the High Plains Writing Project at ENMU-Portales, providing professional development for teachers in southeastern new Mexico. She is a member of both the NM Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of English. She is also a 1993 fellow of the National Writing Project. Ms. Oldfield consults regularly with school districts seeking to improve the teaching of writing in public schools.

Maureen Olguin - Communication Instructor

B.A., M.A., ENMU

Ms. Olguin is a tenured faculty member who has been teaching Communications at ENMU-Roswell since 1997. She is a past NISOD and KOSA award winner  and has presented at the NISOD conference .  She is a judge for NMMI’s annual Rupert/Barton speech competition. She is on the HS/CJ advisory board, and serves the community at large as Vice President of the Family Resource and Referral Board. Maureen is also the President of the Sidney Gutierrez Middle School PTA.

Robert Phillips - Instructor, Psychology, Sociology

Mr. Phillips is a tenured faculty member. He teaches Human Services courses and directs the Human Services program, and as a practicing calligraphy artist is involved in many arts organizations.

Rick Scifres - Social Science Instructor

B.G.S. Chaminade University, MS Troy State University

Mr. Scifres teaches sociology and anthropology. He served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy and was an Education Director in two New Mexico state prisons. He has extensive experience helping others understand individual and group behavior in everyday life.

Marla Wittkopf - University Studies Instructor

B.A., Univ. of No. Iowa, M.S., Drake University

Other Information: Ms. Wittkopf is a tenured faculty member who has been teaching at ENMU-Roswell sine the fall of 1998. She owns and operates a carving business out of her home, carving items out of wood, bark and antler. She has also carved trees which can be viewed throughout the community of Roswell. She has marketed her carvings on the East Coast and in areas of Canada as well. Her Bachelor’s degree was in education, and her Master’s degree was in Counseling Personnel. She has in the past also taught Conflict Resolution, Life Skills and Psychology. She has also worked in the private rehabilitation sector. Her national certifications include CRC, CDMS and CCM.

Daniel Wolkow - English Instructor

A.A. Bucks County Community College, B.A., M.A., Millersville U., PA

Mr. Wolkow teaches Composition, Theatre, Literature, Philosophy, History and Music. He began teaching at ENMU-R in 2004 and is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His Bachelor’s degree is in English and his Master’s degree is in English with a Literature emphasis. He has completed over 100 hours of coursework for a PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanities from the University of Texas at Dallas. He is a published poet, artist and musician. He is also Administrator of the Performing Arts Center and directs the school’s theatrical productions.

Lloyd Chaves - Faculty Emeritus

B.A., M.A., Psychology, ENMU

From 1969-1971, having trained at Ft Bliss, Texas and Ft Rucker, Alabama, Mr. Chaves served in the U.S. Army as a crew-chief and door gunner on the UH 1 Helicopter gunship with the 53rd aviation battalion. From 1972 -74, he attended the Roswell Campus. He went on to graduate with a B.A. from ENMU in 1975. In 1980 he received his M.A. Mr. Chaves was hired by ENMU-Roswell January 15, 1976. He recently retired as a tenured Psychology faculty member. During his 35 years of service, he served many years on the Faculty Evaluation Committee and served on or chaired every major committee on campus. He received the Spirit of Eastern Award, the KOSA Award for Excellence and the NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence. He also was graduation speaker at Unversity High School. In 1996, he coached the under-12 Roswell Youth Soccer City Champions. His favorite quote is the Chinese saying “Teachers open the door but you must enter by yourself.”
