ENMU-Roswell is the lead organization for a grant from the NM Department of Health that is directed toward changes in the community that will result in increased opportunities for recreation, walking, and biking in the community along with increased access to school playgrounds. The major activities are designed to increase healthy lifestyles and healthy nutrition thus reducing the incidence of chronic illness like diabetes and high blood pressure. Some examples are:
Healthy Kids in the Park from 10-12 am with games, crafts, and healthy snacks
June 17 Poe Corn Park
July 21 Delta Park
August 4 Cahoon Park
Move with Blue sponsored in collaboration with Blue Cross Blue Shield NM. An afterschool program at selected elementary schools with programs that include activities, crafts, healthy snacks, and nutrition education.
Built Environment Committee working on increasing access to school playgrounds after hours, increasing walkability of areas around schools, and increasing opportunities for outside activities that are free for children in the community.
Community Garden and Farmer’s Market project in the communities of Dexter, Hagerman and Lake Arthur working in collaboration with the schools and communities to increase access to healthy food in this food desert area.
